At its core, 'Spring Awakening' is about the perils of miscommunication and what happens when people are denied a voice.
When you're a mass-market writer, people think that you can just decide 'this happens, this happens, this happens', whereas with literary writers it's coming from their soul and their core. But with me it does come from my soul and my core, and my soul and my core often go AWOL, and then I've nothing to write.
I loved writing something people usually have - miscommunication, for example. Now that I've written a romance, I'm sure I'll write more: it's fascinating to put people together and see what happens, how they fall in love and what that means in their lives.
One of my favorite things about 'Spring Awakening' is that it is enjoyable and important for both kids and adults to see.
I stand before the Church this day and raise the warning voice. ... It is a voice calling upon the Lords people to prepare for the troubles and desolations which are about to be poured out upon the world without measure. For the moment we live in a day of peace and prosperity but it shall not ever be thus. Great trials lie ahead. All of the sorrows and perils of the past are but a foretaste of what is yet to be. And we must prepare ourselves temporally and spiritually.
If you look not just at the Arab spring, but at what I call the youth spring that has started in Europe, young people are starting to find a voice, and they are not looking to the traditional media to reflect that.

We talk about people being narrow-minded when they have a limited sense of possibility. Well, that’s exactly what they are. They are narrow-frequencied, if you like. When we talk about people awakening, it’s awakening to a greater range of possibilities, of awareness and frequencies.
The translucent revolution is not only about more and more people having awakening, it's also about the way that awakening is embodied â€" and that's much more revolutionary, actually.
When you recognize that there is a voice in your head that pretends to be you and never stops speaking, you are awakening out of your unconscious identification with the stream of thinking. When you notice that voice, you realize that who you are is not the voice - the thinker - but the one who is aware of it.
I did 'Spring Awakening' on Broadway for about three years, and I did over 500 performances.
I'm not against people just being funny or telling stories. I don't need to delve into the soft, dark core all the time. If it happens, it happens.
Revolution is an awakening, so is the spring! Spring is an awakening, so is the revolution!
Spring time is the land awakening.
Only when one is connected to one's own core is one connected to others, I am beginning to discover. And, for me, the core, the inner spring, can best be refound through solitude.
Without collective awakening the catastrophe will come. I think people in the mass media, journalists, film makers and others, you can contribute to the collective awakening if you are awake and then your life will embody that awakening.
Intelligent people, caught at anything, denied it. Faced with evidence of having denied it falsely, people said they had not done it and had not lied about it, and didn't remember it, but if they had done it, or lied about it, they would have done it and misspoken themselves about it in an interest so much higher as to alter the nature of doing and lying altogether.
