... on the right occasion a bold choice of opening can unnerve even the most steely opponent. — © Neil McDonald
... on the right occasion a bold choice of opening can unnerve even the most steely opponent.
The first rule of all air combat is to see the opponent first. Like the hunter who stalks his prey and maneuvers himself unnoticed into the most favourable position for the kill, the fighter in the opening of a dogfight must detect the opponent as early as possible in order to attain a superior position for the attack.
Ultimately, what separates a winner from a loser at the grandmaster level is the willingness to do the unthinkable. A brilliant strategy is, certainly, a matter of intelligence, but intelligence without audaciousness is not enough. Given the opportunity, I must have the guts to explode the game, to upend my opponent's thinking and, in so doing, unnerve him. So it is in business: One does not succeed by sticking to convention. When your opponent can easily anticipate every move you make, your strategy deteriorates and becomes commoditized.

Ask: is what I'm doing and thinking right now bringing me closer to myself or farther away? Opening my heart or closing it? You have a choice.
I made the choice to have the double mastectomy, and for me it felt like the right choice, and it turned out to be the right choice.
I think it's a right that every American parent should have - choice and competition in education, and choice in schools are most important to me.
My dad used to love Steely Dan, the Stones, Jethro Tull and all that. There was always Steely Dan going in my dad's car, but I remember The Royal Scam in particular because it has 'Kid Charlemagne' on it.
I listen to Steely Dan. I really like Steely Dan.
I like to go into things, and I like to make the most bold choice to tell the particular story being told.
You must be proud, bold, pleasant, resolute, And now and then stab, as occasion serves.
