I used to record songs, like, play the beat from one phone and have another phone recording me and just rap. Moving from that to a studio was like, 'Damn, I never knew I could sound like this.' It was just magic.
I got on the phone with the president of my label and I said, "Obviously, I write songs in a lot of styles and play a lot of different kinds of music. We're getting toward the end of our business collaboration. If you could envision a record that you wanted to hear from me, what kind of record would it be?" I'll go in the studio and hear a track that I don't like, and they're trying to pay me to rap over it. But I'll tell them I just can't do it. And when they ask why, I say, 'Because then somebody's gonna hear it... damn, find another track.'
I definitely find my time to be away from my phone because I think that's important, but when it comes to work and friends, I feel like everything is on my phone. I'll, like, leave my phone in my room for a few hours when I need my space.
