Writers don't want to appear to be stupid. I don't know - maybe people become writers so that they can prove that they're not. Of course getting a book published doesn't mean that they're not stupid. At a certain point you have to stop trying to prove something and write because you need to think about something and want to communicate, in a very broad sense.
Maybe because I began as a writer, I have a good ear for dialogue, and maybe being an English major - and that I also read a lot as a kid - if I hear somebody say something that I think's funny, or I find a situation or story, I'll try to work that into the movie.
Maybe because English is my second language, maybe I just translate mundane clichés from the Welsh language and they sound original in English. I am going through a bit of an obsession with bad puns. I am hoping I'll grow out of it. Maybe it's just a phase.
If you can say something to people that's maybe a little bit insulting, but they're kind of giggling as they are hearing it, if you say something to their face without them getting mad at you, I think that's the right balance. You don't want to make it uncomfortable, especially for the viewer or the people around either. Sometimes that happens. You're watching and you're like, 'Uh, this is awkward. I don't want to look!' But, if everybody's enjoying it, I think that works.
I think making friends is not being afraid to look stupid, because everyone wants a friend who is willing to be stupid and fun. If you try and be too cool, it only works in high school.
