I like to make an image that is so simple you can't avoid it, and so complicated you can't figure it out. — © Alex Katz
I like to make an image that is so simple you can't avoid it, and so complicated you can't figure it out.
It is easy to be accurate if you have the freedom to be complicated, and it is very easy to be simple if you have the freedom to shade the truth. What's hard is to be simple and very accurate, and that takes work to figure out what are the simple truths that are going to sustain your case.
I admire writers who can make complicated things simple, but my own talent has been to make simple things complicated.
Let go. Let go of all the stress and drama in your life. It's not worth it, and your body is far too important - too precious - to be bothered by a simple psych-out. You will figure it all out eventually, so why make life more complicated?
I take simple everyday things that happen to me and I figure it happens to a lot of other people and I make simple rhymes out of them.
Life isn't complicated. It's very simple, really. It's us who make it complicated.
I make one image—though 'make' is not the right word; I let, perhaps, an image be 'made' emotionally in me and then apply to it what intellectual & critical forces I possess—let it breed another, let that image contradict the first, make, of the third image bred out of the other two together, a fourth contradictory image, and let them all, within my imposed formal limits, conflict.
For me, creating a supply chain of what we should be eating is incredibly complicated. It's complicated to figure out how to change the food system in America.
Educators take something simple and make it complicated. Communicators take something complicated and make it simple.
The sun is simple. A sword is simple. A storm is simple. Behind everything simple is a huge tail of complicated.
If you look at the image [ Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self ], it treads on a kind of popular stereotypical image of the black figure, in both its flatness and slightly comic edge. To take that image as a starting point and to render it in a proto-classical medium, like egg tempera, and then use a repertoire of classical compositional devices to make the picture was a way of setting up an engagement with art history.
Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity.
I like simple food, seasoned with just salt, pepper, oil and vinegar. Complicated food and complicated lives are never good.
We tend to think of science as finding equations, like E=MC2, that are simple and elegant. But maybe some theories are complicated, and we can only find the simple ones.
My routine is very simple because I realised that the more complicated the exercise sessions are, the less likely I am to make it for them. They have to be simple and doable in my daily routine.
I avoid social networks and I try to live a very normal, simple life. I love spending time and hang out with my friends any time I can. I like a very simple life.
Evaluate. Long experience had taught me to evaluate and assess. When the unexpected gets dumped on you, don’t waste time. Don’t figure out how or why it happened. Don’t recriminate. Don’t figure out whose fault it is. Don’t work out how to avoid the same mistake next time. All of that you do later. If you survive.
