You tend to be more attentive when you shoot on film because, you know, it costs more, and everybody needs to be focused when you're filming something. Everybody considers it something valuable and precious, so everybody's focused.
There's so much beauty in Africa, but it's not endless. We have to prevent these crimes and these awful, awful killings. I just hope people pay attention to it.
I learn the lines as soon as I can and then the challenge really, for filming, is to show up and be there and respond to what's around you. That's where the gold dust is. It's really strange, no amount of preparation will help you with the magic of spontaneity on the day [of filming].
Most people are really fighting to not be adults. And, when it happens, it's a big transition. And a lot of that is just awful. It's awful to have to get a job and really be responsible for other people. And it is funny, too. Like, we're all kind of little idiot kids trying to act like we know what we are doing.
I went from basically filming in my bedroom by myself, filming some funny videos, and then overnight, I switched into filming in some studios and some warehouses and family homes. I started filming with directors and producers and editors, and there were so many people in the room, so it was definitely weird.
There are five different ways you can do it. You can do it through not giving them the subsidy that we pay them. You know, we pay Mexico a subsidy. I don't know if you know. But the whole thing is ridiculous. We're paying everybody subsidy. We actually have a small portion of China where they get a subsidy from us because they haven't ended it for years.
This was years ago, I think during the early [Ronald] Reagan years. I came up with a plan that everybody just pay $8.95 in taxes. Cheating would be allowed. But the incentive to cheat wouldn't be nearly as great if you only had to pay the $8.95. There were a few people who would have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars under this plan. I think it was Mark Goodson and Bill Todman, the guys who do the quiz shows. But almost everybody else would be off really cheap.
I was so used to documentary filming, where it's one take. You can't really say, 'Make that elephant charge again!' And you talk to the camera. With movie filming, you're talking to someone else.
The only thing that's really hard for me is when I go to bed after everybody else in my house gets up. And that - you just feel stale. It just feels awful to be still finishing your day when everybody else is starting theirs.
That was an amazing time period [ CBGB filming] to transport to during filming - the clothes, the music, the lifestyle - it really helps to get into character when there's so much that changes from the moment you step onto the set.
I'm friends with everybody, I love everybody. I trust everybody because they don't give me reasons not to you know what I'm saying? So, if everybody just trusted everybody and if everybody just loved everybody then we'd live in a perfect world... you know what I'm saying? I mean, why not?
You just never know when somebody's gonna die. It could happen at any moment so you've got to really treat everybody that way. Just really let everybody know how you feel about them.
But 'Cuban Linx' was a project that really needed to come, and I really wanted to get it off my chest because I know that the fans were really skeptical about it, like 'is this really gonna be what it's supposed to be?' So once everybody caught it for what it was and everybody was happy, that's mission accomplished for me.

I've done an awful lot of trying to make everybody else okay and happy. I have learned, now it would really be ok to wait for someone who wants to be there for me and partner with me and I'm really looking forward to it.
On the set, everybody is different, so you have to deal with different sensibilities. I don't have a method. Usually, I try to have a good connection with the actor that I'm filming. Even a guy who's there with two lines of dialogue, I always try to have a connection with the guy I'm filming, just to make it into a nice, enjoyable moment.
