Some coaches and quarterbacks over-analyze things at times. Sometimes it can be pitch and catch, let the play-makers make plays.
Great quarterbacks, good quarterbacks, make plays.
We did all the strategy right on the field. Today, the coaches call all the plays, so all the quarterbacks have to do is perform. They are more or less programmed.
Like I always say, it's not how many great plays you make; it's how few bad ones you make. I know fans, and even some losing coaches, are enamored with long pass completions or the great run plays, but that doesn't offset the interception or the fumble.
All quarterbacks, each play is its own entity, and you can pick apart each play. Sometimes they do a good job getting to the checkdown, and sometimes they progress faster.
Like some cult religion that barely survives, there has always been at least one but rarely more than five or six devotees throwing the knuckleball in the big leagues . . . Not only can't pitchers control it, hitters can't hit it, catchers can't catch it, coaches can't coach it and most pitchers can't learn it. The perfect pitch.
Sometimes you try different things when you play the best ones many times and you lost a few times, so you have to change sometimes.
Play a little light catch and only some short sprints for me. Then on the day-of, it's just getting loosened up and ready to go out there and pitch.
I'm making a kind of a memoir of certain aspects and times in my life. Now that I'm older I can look back and analyze some things, and see the root of things.
A lot of times those things are shaped by coaches you work with, but other times they're shaped by coaches you admire and study.
If you prepare well and you play smart, there's times you'll dirt the ball or throw it away if you feel it's not there, but there's other times when you have to be aggressive and let your guys make plays.
If I've got to come out for a few plays in order to get back right and make sure I catch my wind so I can be ready for the next play, I'll do that.
A lot of quarterbacks have big arms and can make all the throws, but the most important thing is knowledge of the game, controlling the offense and, more than anything, limiting mistakes. Knowing what good plays to get your team into at the line of scrimmage and what bad plays to get out of.
There are times where I am trying to make the big play before I even catch the football.
Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. There are games to be won. And the magical things you can do with that ball will make you the winning-est winner of all. Fame! You'll be as famous as famous can be, with the whole wide world watching you win on TV. Except when they don't Because, sometimes they won't. I'm afraid that some times you'll play lonely games too. Games you can't win 'cause you'll play against you.
It's hard to find logic in things sometimes. That's why I can't analyze things too much, because it often doesn't make much sense.
There's been a lot of legends that I've gotten the opportunity to play against, some to play with. Those guys, sometimes they retire or different things, younger guys come up, they start over them.
