The SDP's founder, Roy Jenkins, was my hero and later mentor.
The late Roy Jenkins was both a mentor and a personal friend. He was a man of both phenomenal intellect and political achievement in equal measure.
I joined the SDP as a founder member a few days after my 18th birthday in 1981. I was a councillor, activist and parliamentary candidate for the SDP and its successor party, the Liberal Democrats, for 14 years before joining Labour when Tony Blair became leader and abolished Labour's old clause IV - committing to general nationalisation - in 1995.
I like good food and decent wine as much as Roy Jenkins does, but I keep quiet about it.
In myths and movies, the mentor can play a few roles: they bring the hero a magical gift, teach them how to use a special tool, or help the hero get unstuck. In a presentation setting, the presenter is the mentor. Our role as a presenter is similar to a mentor. We should be brining something of important value to our audience, they should not leave empty handed. There should be something useful and somewhat life-altering that we give them. It's not very often that we sit through a presentation and feel like we've sat at the feet of a mentor, but we should.
As for Roy, I love playing Roy. I'm working at it, but I wish I had less of a care of what people thought of me, so that I could be more like Roy.
My childhood hero was Roy Rogers.
Roy Race was a comic book hero, and Steven Gerrard is a real-life one.
I met Roy's father once... And I think that Roy's relationship with his father is still at the heart of what Roy does. But at the end of the day, he's trying to prove himself to a father he'll never really please.
On 'Arrow,' we have Ray Palmer and Roy Harper, and if you call Roy 'Ray' and Ray 'Roy,' you have to put money into the jar.
Marian Wright Edelman is a mentor and hero of mine.
Roy Acuff was a big hero for me, and I was so sad when he passed. It's hard as you get older to lose your friends and family.
A mentor enables a person to achieve. A hero shows what achievement looks like.
I remember seeing war hero Jimmy Doolittle fly a Gee Bee racer there. He was my childhood hero. Many years later, I was lucky enough to go hunting with him.
I'm proud to be Archie's son. Being a quarterback, I had my mentor and hero living in the same house.
Roy was just another bureaucrat to me, but I realized very soon that without Roy this thing would have died.
I will be gutted if Roy does go because I would far rather he stayed at Old Trafford. (on Roy Keane leaving Manchester United)
