From day one working in TV, I have been very conscious of the way the Irish are represented, In every show I've been involved in I read the script, take out the Irishisms right away and say, 'I'll supply those'.
There's more of a family connection when you're working on a TV show. That's not to say that you don't make great connections when you're working on films, but it's different unless you're there working every day.
I always take part in the creative process of every film of mine. Gone are the days where an actor would walk into the sets, finish his portions, take the money, and leave. Since I come from a television background, that has been my school of thought from the beginning, but what TV does to you is it drains you out because you are just working every day.
I'm Irish as hell: Kelly on one side, Shanley on the other. My father had been born on a farm in the Irish Midlands. Irish writing is so strong that it can feel like the country has all been covered, but in fact, there are so many gaps. I really loved working on comedy. Most of my roles have been very dramatic and involved lots of emotional work and crying on cue. To go from Girl, Interrupted, where I had to cry every day, to a TV show like West Wing where I get to laugh and joke around every day, has been a welcome relief.
