I don't have time for a job that doesn't leave me time to be quiet or still or to pray. — © Barbara Brown Taylor
I don't have time for a job that doesn't leave me time to be quiet or still or to pray.
There was no time anymore to be quiet or still or pray. So, in many ways, that's what led to my downward spin.
It's really important to me to still spend time in the ends - I'm there all the time. I do my videos there, I still talk about it. It's important for me to be an inspiration to the youth of the area and not just leave now I've blown up.
If you cannot find time to pray, ask for forgiveness. Ask to be cleansed of the sin of having no time to pray ... It could be that Satan is pushing you into too much work so that you cannot take time to pray.
I was very depressed when I was 19... I would go back to my apartment every day and I would just sit there. It was quiet and it was lonely. It was still. It was just my piano and myself. I had a television and I would leave it on all the time just to feel like somebody was hanging out with me.
I’m me, and at the same time not me. That’s what it felt like. A very still, quiet feeling.
I pray because I can't help myself. I pray because I'm helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time- waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God- it changes me.
"It is light that reveals, light that obscures, light that communicates. It is light I "listen" to. The light late in the day has a distinct quality, as it fades toward the darkness of evening. After sunset there is a gentle leaving of the light, the air begins to still, and a quiet descends. I see magic in the quiet light of dusk. I feel quiet, yet intense energy in the natural elements of our habitat. A sense of magic prevails. A sense of mystery. It is a time for contemplation, for listening - a time for making photographs. I think about my parents all the time, especially on Sunday when I'm at Mass. My mother always said, 'We do not pray to win elections. We pray for people's health, we pray that God's will be done, we pray that we do our best. But we do not pray to win elections.'
For me, there's still plenty of ground to be covered, as I get older. It's worked out great so far. I take it one job at a time. I'll just keep my eyes toward the next job and see where it takes me.
The idea for a book usually bubbles up from my sub-conscious when I am drifting off to sleep. Each one has started as a line or two that I've heard in my head. As a writer, you have to leave space to listen for words. That means finding time to be quiet and listen for that still, small voice.
I want to yell so loud that Baby Girl can hear me that dirty ain't a color, disease ain't the Negro side a town. I want to stop that moment from coming - and it come in ever white child's life - when they start to think that colored folks ain't as good as whites. ... I pray that wasn't her moment, Pray I still got time.

I still dream about 'New York' mag. It's kind of weird. I dream I'm part-time, and they can't find a full-time job for me. It's usually that I can't find a lead, and I call all my great sources and say, 'Can you help me out?'
