The economics of theater are painful. I still think that the theater community should be looking much more rigorously at how to let the playwright keep the money they make.
There's nothing in Hollywood that's inherently detrimental to good art. I think that's a fallacy that we've created because we frame the work that way too overtly. 'This is Hollywood.' 'This isn't Hollywood.' It's like, 'No, this is actually all Hollywood.' People are just framing them differently.
I think a playwright must be his own dramaturg. I believe in a theater where the director and the playwright work together to create what they need.

If you're a playwright, unless you're really lacking in get-up-and-go, you can always get your play up somewhere. Being on a film set is like being in tech forever. In theater, when you finally finish rehearsing, you go onstage and you do the lights and the sets and you make the machine of the production work. A playwright, especially a playwright whose work deals very directly with an audience, perhaps he should pay some attention to the nature of the audience response - not necessarily to learn anything about his craft, but as often as not merely to find out about the temper of the time, what is being tolerated, what is being permitted.
