Then the challenge is, once you left brain it and build it, then when you're on stage you have to know it so well that you can get lost in it. I'm always interested in characters who are closed down, but who open up when they choose to, rather than when they're obliged to. I think that's a very appealing thing, for an audience and just in life. I like the idea that something will say nothing, and then get straight to the point. That feels like how your heroes should be.
And then afterwards I worked in advertising for a year which taught me about writing even when you don't want to (laughter) because there's never a moment that you want to write about an Erickson cell phone but you have to. And that's really important you know obviously for the...like if you really want to write, you have to write every day no matter how you feel or you know. And then, yeah, and then I ended up working in TV and then from TV into movies and then directing, so.
I think no matter what you look like, the key is to first of all be happy with yourself. And then you know if you want to try to improve things that you don't like about yourself, then do it after your appreciate yourself.
You want a career? Do that first. You don't want to have kids? Then don't. You don't want to get married? Then don't. But once you do something, you've got to know that there is compromise.
When you know that you have to flirt with someone, when you have a date or that you're looking for someone to love or for someone to love you back, you always try to show something better than yourself. Because you want to show off, obviously, you want to show the best side of you. Instead, when you have nothing to lose, you're just yourself. And maybe this is the best part, when another person can fall in love with you.
I find as long as I acknowledge the truth of something, then that's it. I know what it is and then I can operate. But if I overestimate the downside of something or the challenge of something and I get too obsessed about the difficulty of it, then I don't leave enough room to be open to the upside, the possibility.
There's some [films] where I do a lot of homework and then there's some, where it's supposed to take you by surprise. So you kind of just want to get in there and have everything take you by surprise rather than just have him tell you how everything went down.
It's everyone's dread to lose a child. You lose someone you love so much, so young. It does hit you like nothing else, and there is a bit of you that thinks, well, if you can face that sort of challenge in your life, then it puts everything else into perspective.
