People used to live lives of quiet desperation - now they go on talk shows!
Most men lead lives of quiet desperation. I can't take quiet desperation!
The vast majority of the people who populate our planet live lives of quiet desperation that are all too often quite harsh and painful, lives in which events and circumstances usually don't turn out the way they had hoped or planned.
The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation.
I am interested in the gap between what people say and what they think - the undiscovered world of people's lives. Lives of quiet desperation.
Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.
There are millions of people living Thoreau's life of quiet desperation, and they do not have the language to escape from that desperation.
The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work. I used to play Saturday night shows with different little groups. If I could get a show, I would do it. I used to do mad things - I used to go and do these shows and go on my knees and roll on the ground - when I was 15,16 years old. And my parents were extremely disapproving of it all. Because it was just not done. This was for very low-class people, remember. Rock & roll singers weren't educated people
Maybe I`m getting to the age when I`m starting to be senile or nostalgic or both, but people are so angry now. You used to be able to disagree with people and still be friends. Now you hear these talk shows, and everyone who believes differently from you is a moron and an idiot - both on the Right and the Left.
People can think what they want to think, I don't go after people. I think most people I talk to, like me, are very quiet and keep to themselves, they maintain their lives.
