Canelo Alvarez is a very good fighter. I believe he's the best 160 fighter in the world. I don't think there's a fighter at 160 who can beat him.
Style-wise, I'm not ideal to fight, but I'm not taking anything away from 'Canelo' Alvarez, he's a special fighter and he's one of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world for a reason.
One thing I see in a lot of coaches is they try to live through the fighter. You can't live through the fighter. You gotta allow the fighter to be the fighter, and do what he do, and you just try to guide him. Why should I have to live through a fighter, when I went from eating out of a trashcan to being eight-time world champion? I stood in the limelight and did what I had to do as a fighter. I've been where that fighter is trying to go.
I'm not going to say I'm not ready for a fighter like Canelo Alvarez.
What people don't realize I have put 160 kids through school. I had a gym full of children. Some of those kids slept in the gym. Some of those kids lived in the gyms. I went to those kids schools. I think with the training, I can't make a fighter have that passion that I have, and it takes years to develop a fighter.
Canelo is a good young fighter, but he probably shouldn't be in the ring with me. It should have been somebody else. Hopefully he can learn from it and become a better fighter. He seems like a good young kid.
I know I'm a good fighter, probably a great fighter. I've fought the best in the world since I was a kid, and I've been fortunate to come out on top.
Lucian Bute had the world title for five years, he made nine defenses and he's a good, good fighter. The fight before that, I beat Andre Dirrell, who comes from a good pedigree and is a hell of a southpaw. It just shows you the kind of fighter I am when I focus and do my job.
I think he's a special fighter, I'm a big Canelo fan, but I think he's a special fighter at middleweight and I think a lot of his advantages he has at that level, he'll lose when he steps up to super middleweight.
A lot of people don't have people to tell them, 'You're the best, and nobody can beat you.' You gotta have a lot of confidence to tell your fighter that. And you have to make a fighter believe he's the best to be the best.
He's an old good fighter, he's an intelligent fighter but I wouldn't say he's the best I've ever fought.
I don't think that boxing historians have been able to find a case in which a great fighter, or a fighter presumed to be a great fighter, came to such an ignominious end.
Anyone who is friends with a fighter or lives with a fighter, you know that a fighter cutting weight is on edge.
To use a fighter as a fighter-bomber when the strength of the fighter arm is inadequate to achieve air superiority is putting the cart before the horse.
People always say, 'I want to be the best fighter in the world.' That's why I respect Conor. He said he wants to be the best fighter in the world, and he's trying to prove it.
I'm a very respectful fighter, I don't get out of character and start talking crazy, but if you don't want to fight a fighter, or you don't think it's a good style, or it's just not time, then say that.
There are rules that say 'If a fighter gets old, when a fighter slows down, when a fighter stops looking the same, then he can never come back.' I don't like that.
