I've always had wanderlust to try and do different things, but I always return to the music of the Carter family. — © Carlene Carter
I've always had wanderlust to try and do different things, but I always return to the music of the Carter family.
I've always wanted to be a communicator of ideas through music. Today, I wanna be the most effective musical communicator of social change I could be, so I try to find different ways to do it and I'm always challenging myself to find new things, learn new instruments. But I always try to find in my heart, what it is I really want to say with words.
But I'm also a music lover, and I'll always try a lot of different things.
We operate from this position of, "Let's build the skeleton and then insert the filling." We have this ping-pong dynamic with each other where we're able to try different things and bounce different ideas, and it ends up being us building our music together. I've never had a moment where I've been like, "I don't like it." Actually, that's total bullshit. I've had many moments where I'm like, "I don't like it," but it's always evolving.
It's a matriarchal family, the Carters. A.P. was the original head of the Carter family, but the women were always strong. There were no questions asked in that regard; you had better be strong.
We always looked at the movie sequels that we admired, and they always pivot and they always try new things. Even if you swing and miss, at least you're trying something different.
We always had National Geographic and Astronomy magazines and Popular Mechanics lying around the house. I got interested in exploration and different parts of the world and different parts of the universe just from seeing those things around the house and the different discussions we had as a family.
I have spent a very long time in Cate's shadow - she casts a pretty big one. I have always had the support of my family and coach, and they have always stressed we are completely different people and will achieve things in our own time. They stressed I would get my moment. I just had to be patient.
My family has always had Cape Verdean pride but I don't think it was something the kids in the family necessarily understood. However, I was very conscious of the fact that both sides of my family were drastically different and my aunts, cousins, and uncles varied in different shades of brown.
I've always liked music that has a darker vein to it. I come from such a safe upbringing - very stable, classic family, everything's nice and good - I was always looking for something different.
I grew up in a house that was always happy, and my family was always music, music. I started playing percussion very young, because I had some uncles who were musicians and all my aunts were singers.
I've always wanted to do non-comedies, I've always done dramas, comedies, music, and I always like to bop around and do different things.
I've always wanted to do non-comedies. I've always done dramas, comedies, music, and I always like to bop around and do different things.
In terms of negotiating a career - I've always grown up being an insider and an outsider to different worlds, across different classes and cultures, so I have always naturally liked making films or music that puts things in unexpected places.
Wanderlust is not a passion for travel exactly, it’s something more animal and more fickle- more like lust. We don’t lust after very many things in life. We don’t need words like ‘worklust’ or ‘homemakinglust.’ But travel? The essayist Anatole Broyard put it perfectly: ‘Travel is like adultery: one is always tempted to be unfaithful to one’s own country. To have imagination is inevitably to be dissatisfied with where you live… in our wanderlust, we are lovers looking for consummation.’
I try to listen to as much different music as possible - I've always got music blasting in my ears!
We're all different and I respect my difference. I just try to be myself at all times. As long as I do that my music is always going to be different.
