I don't just want to make the playoffs or get to the first or second round. When I compete or make it to the playoffs, I expect to win every time.
I went to Golden State and helped them get to the playoffs my first year there, and they haven't been to the playoffs in 13 years. I played in Charlotte... and I got them to the playoffs. So, every team I go to, I make them better.
I'm pretty sure everybody in the NBA wants to make the playoffs. Every player, every coach, every organization wants to make the playoffs.
Well, of course you question it, especially when you get to this point. I always look at it would I rather not make the playoffs or lose in The Finals? I don't know. I don't know. I've missed the playoffs twice. I lost in The Finals four times. I'm almost starting to be like I'd rather not even make the playoffs than to lose in The Finals. It would hurt a lot easier if I just didn't make the playoffs and I didn't have a shot at it.
My situation is different from Mark's. I'm not looking for home runs, I'm looking for the playoffs.
I look for a quarterback who can run and not a running back who can throw. I want a quarterback who can beat you with his arm. We are not a Tim Tebow type of quarterback team. I am not going to run my quarterback 20 times on power runs.
I just want to go deep in the playoffs and be put in that situation where I'm locked in and the game and the season is on the line.
I want to be a guy who produces runs, who drives in runs, who can beat you with a single or can beat you with a home run, who's just a tough out.
I have one of those Garmin watches, and I'm OCD about downloading my runs no matter where I go. I used it on an 18-mile run in Paris, a 12-miler in the mountains of Montana, a couple of runs in the Bahamas. Wherever I am, I try to run. That's what's so great about it.
Even if it's just two shots, I just want to see the ball go in the hole. That gives me the confidence to know I can make shots when I'm called upon in a playoff type of situation.
I've been in just about every situation as a player and coach and manager. I've been in the playoffs, World Series, and I know how to get there.
It's fun to just get out there and have a nice conversation when I'm running. To be honest, when I do longer runs, the trail that I like to run up in Malibu has mountain lions, so I always feel I want to run with someone else.
I can say all of the goals I want individually, but if we make the playoffs those individual accolades will come.
Every year you go in and you obviously want to win a World Series, at least make the playoffs.
Every time you don't make the playoffs, you have something inside that you want to prove again next year.
Any play, I'm ready for all the plays, ... That's the whole thing. . . . Any time I can get out and show I can do this, do those type of things, I'm going to do it. It was just fun, being able to run and get down the field. Just run, do what I do.
