The trouble with happiness is that it never notices itself. — © Cynthia Ozick
The trouble with happiness is that it never notices itself.
People misunderstand happiness. They think it's the absence of trouble. That's not happiness, that's luck. Happiness is the ability to live well alongside trouble. No two people have the same trouble, or the same way of metabolizing it. Q.E.D. - No two happy people are happy in the same way. . . . Every day brilliant people, people smarter than I, wallow in safe tragedy and pessimism, shying from what really takes guts - recognizing how much courage and labor happiness demands.
Better never trouble trouble until trouble troubles you; for you only make your trouble double trouble when you do.
Happiness will never come if it's a goal in itself; happiness is a by-product of a commitment of worthy causes.
The less one notices happiness, the greater it is.
The way of the Lord is the way of happiness. ‘Wickedness never was happiness’ [Alma 41:10]. Transgression never was happiness. Sin never was happiness. Disobedience never was happiness. The way of happiness is following the way of the Lord. I believe this with all my heart.
Certainly I believe that God gave us life for happiness, not misery. Humanity, I am sure, will never be made lazy or indifferent by an excess of happiness. Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose. Happiness should be a means of accomplishment, like health, not an end in itself.
The trouble is not that we are never happy-it is that happiness is so episodical.
What a man notices first about a woman is whether she notices him.
Nobody notices it when your zipper is up, but everyone notices when it's down.
Trust is like the air we breathe--when it's present, nobody really notices; when it's absent, everybody notices.
What if I gave thanks in the trouble, for the trouble, because the trouble is a gift that causes me to turn? What if I loved God not for His goods but for His love itself that is goodness enough?
So what is happiness? I am sure this question will be asked through the ages. And I doubt there is one answer for all people. Like heaven and hell, one person's happiness can be another person's unhappiness, which is why I'm not attempting to tell you what to do to find your happiness. I have enough trouble finding and hanging onto my own true happiness.
[Slogan of her 'Trouble Bureau' for needy artists and musicians:] Happiness is a change of trouble.
They who in trouble untroubled are Will trouble trouble itself.
... trouble of all kinds is voluble, and has plenty of words, but happiness was never written down.
Personally, I've never had it as a goal in life to be happy. Seems impossible to achieve. Even the Declaration of Independence seems to acknowledge this. They talk about the pursuit of happiness, not happiness itself.
