Implausible truth can serve one better than plausible fiction — © David Mitchell
Implausible truth can serve one better than plausible fiction
My friend, the truth is always implausible, did you know that? To make the truth more plausible, it's absolutely necessary to mix a bit of falsehood with it. People have always done so.
Science fiction makes the implausible possible, while science fantasy makes the impossible plausible.
When it [truth] emerges it often bears out the saying that 'truth is stranger than fiction.' A novelist has to appear plausible, and would hesitate to make use of such astounding contradictions as occur in history through some extraordinary accident or twist of psychology .
Fact is often stranger than fiction because most writers of fiction try to make their stories plausible.
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, but usually fiction is just better.
Truth is so hard to tell, it sometimes needs fiction to make it plausible.
It is better to be divided by truth than to be united in error. It is better to speak the truth that hurts and then heals, than falsehood that comforts and then kills. It is better to be hated for telling the truth than to be loved for telling a lie. It is better to stand alone with the truth, than to be wrong with a multitude. It is better to ultimately succeed with the truth than to temporarily succeed with a lie. There is only one Gospel.
The need for truth is not constant; no more than is the need for repose. An idea which is a distortion may have a greater intellectual thrust than the truth; it may better serve the needs of the spirit, which vary. The truth is balance, but the opposite of truth, which is unbalance, may not be a lie.
I don't believe a poet has a better hold on truth or morality than a fiction writer has. And I don't think a fiction writer has anything over a journalist. It's all about the good word, properly inserted.
Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.
Truth is better than fiction in terms of telling the story.
I have to conclude that fiction is better at 'the truth' than a factual record.
To think that humans evolved from lower species BUT the evolutionary process somehow came to a halt and we all arrived at the finish line simultaneously is to embrace a fiction possibly more implausible than Christianity.
Truth might be stranger than fiction, but it needs a better editor.
We'll look for almost any reason not to change our attitudes; the inertia of the established order is powerful. If we can think of a plausible, or even implausible, reason to discount environmental warnings, we will.
While fiction is often impossible, it should not be implausible.
