I don't got time to sit and wait for guys like Canelo.
Canelo, let's get it on. I've been beating these guys. Where's Canelo? Where's Triple G?
For Canelo to call me boring, I mean, is he serious with that? I mean, I'm boring but Rocky Fielding is really exciting. Yeah, sure Canelo. Liam Smith was so exciting. Everybody couldn't wait for that.
I may not be fighting the most popular guys like Canelo or GGG. But I am fighting real fighters, tough guys who want to prove that they belong and be world champions.
My job is to keep winning, getting in the ring with the likes of, of course Canelo, GGG. I'd like to put my skills and talent against these guys.
Look at me: The guys I fight, they're in their primes. Canelo is out there fighting guys on their way out.
For the title, if they say, 'Ok, let's sit and wait,' I will sit and wait because I know it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
All these guys are just like me. They were a rookie at one time in their life. They treat me like I'm one of the guys. I look at Greg Maddux and saw him sitting over there and said, 'Man, that's Greg Maddux. That guy is going to be in the Hall of Fame.' Now I sit there and talk to him like a teammate. It's a reality check, and it's a great feeling at the same time.
What am I supposed to do, Sit around and wait for you? Well I can't do that, And there's no turning back. I need time to move on, I need love to feel strong. Cause I've got time to think it through, And maybe I'm too good for you!
I called the guys from Promise of the Real, whom I've been playing with, and they were all on the road. Right after I hung up the phone, I wrote another song and started writing another, and I'm going, "Hey, I can't wait. I should be doing this now!" My experience tells me that when it's there, it's there, and you can't make it wait. So I got Jimmy Keltner and Paul Bushnell, two good guys, and went in and did this record ["Peace Trail"].
Every time I sit down and write I got to put something conscious in there. It's like I got a job now. They say that for those that know you got to deal in equality. If you know and you don't speak on it and don't apply it, it's like you're the worst hypocrite. I feel I got a job to do, being that I study so much and I believe in Allah like I do, I feel like I got to spread the word.
Seeing guys like Canelo helps me get better because they are already champions and I want to become champion. Having role models like that helps me a lot.
I think the worst professional advice I received was this kind of unspoken message of "sit back and wait your turn," or "sit back and wait and let other people do things."
Canelo's a different breed. A lot of people think because of the way I made Canelo look, they're going to be able to do the same thing, but that's not true. He's a strong fighter.
A boxing match is like a cowboy movie. There's got to be good guys and there's got to be bad guys. And that's what people pay for - to see the bad guys get beat.
We are fighting tough guys to get it on whereas Canelo and GGG have been cherry-picking. They can do that with the profile they have. It's just business. I'm not upset about it because my time will come when I walk in with one belt and walk out with four.
Now all you can do is wait. It must be hard for you, but there is a right time for everything. Like the ebb and flow of tides. No one can do anything to change them. When it is time to wait, you must wait.
