Players are under enough pressure to perform from fans and the media without a manager complicating matters further in public.
As a manager, everyone is clambering for you to do something. It comes from the media, the fans, the board and even your own staff sometimes. The strongest thing can be to do nothing and remind the players of the simplicity of the format. The players have taken ownership of that.
We have to connect to our fans through the media, and when you talk about that, it's got to come from your heart. And when it comes from your heart, it has to be absolutely consistent. There's a big risk you take without an interpreter because, as professional baseball players, we are here to perform baseball, not to learn a language.
I think the Nigel Pearson, on the outside in the media seat, is very, very different to the guy that we see on a daily basis. I've said many times that he's the best manager that I've ever played under and creates a great atmosphere and platform for his players to start to perform.
I loved that pressure. That's what fuels you as a player. That achievement of playing for Celtic is massive. All the fans put that pressure on your head but it makes sure you go and perform.
To some degree it matters who's in office, but it matters more how much pressure they're under from the public.
You want to come home from a tournament with a winner's medal. That's not the fans or the media putting us under pressure, that's the pressure we put ourselves under.
You get nit-picked in the media. Stats are always up saying he doesn't drive it straight enough or hit enough greens or whatever it is. Then you have to perform, because if you don't perform, then you're off the Tour.
Without public pressure from caring people, our lawsuits will not be enough to stop this widespread abuse.
I don't feel much pressure at all. I have great family support, and they take a lot of pressure off me. They help to control media and public interest.
In a team, you need players who are technically good and can perform under pressure.
There are times when new players replace injured players in the national squad. Since the new players don't have enough experience and match practice at the international level, they seldom play under a lot of pressure.
As players, whenever the manager gets the sack, you have to look in the mirror and say it's not always the manager. It's down to the players.
People tend to assess the relative importance of issues by the ease with which they are retrieved from memory—and this is largely determined by the extent of coverage in the media. Frequently mentioned topics populate the mind even as others slip away from awareness. In turn, what the media choose to report corresponds to their view of what is currently on the public’s mind. It is no accident that authoritarian regimes exert substantial pressure on independent media. Because public interest is most easily aroused by dramatic events and by celebrities, media feeding frenzies are common
Baseball is a simple game. If you have good players, and you keep them in the right frame of mind, the manager is a success. The players make the manager. It's never the other way. Managing is not running, hitting, or stealing. Managing is getting your players to put out one hundred percent year after year. A player does not have to like a manager and he does not have to respect a manager. All he has to do is obey the rules. Talent is one thing. Being able to go from spring to October is another. You just got caught in a position where you have no position.
For me, I went into 'Drag Race' wanting to further catapult my career, to travel around the world, and perform for all my fans.
As players, we have the best job in the world and if the manager said, 'You haven't worked hard enough, you will only get half your wages this week,' it would make the players fight harder.
