When you're performing, you're creating a moment. — © Erykah Badu
When you're performing, you're creating a moment.
I wanted really to make it moment to moment, partly because I'm an actor and that's how I operate - actors are all about creating the moment.
Do you want to know what you are? You are a creator. At every moment you are creating. The real question is, what are you creating?
Arts is like the power of now. When you're performing, when you're playing, when you're sculpting, painting, it's that moment. I'm in the moment of my life, and that's what I love to do.
I don't even know at what age I started, because it's always been there. Performing... creating... it's in my DNA.
I don’t even know at what age I started, because it’s always been there. Performing … creating … it’s in my DNA.
I definitely love performing live because there are moments of spontaneity. And as much as you're performing on stage, I feel like the audience is performing, too.
From the moment I saw 'Camelot' as a kid, the organic inclination of performing before a live audience is raw and visceral. Once you're out there, there's no yelling 'Cut!' or any such thing as a do-over because that moment has passed, and you're in it as it's happened and gone, sharing it with everyone.
What I've discovered is that in art, as in music, there's a lot of truth-and then there's a lie. The artist is essentially creating his work to make this lie a truth, but he slides it in amongst all the others. The tiny little lie is the moment I live for, my moment. It's the moment that the audience falls in love.
Being able to improvise is the basis for creating all characters and situations, for everything to do with performing, really. And it's good therapy as well.
Marijuana, for me in particular, releases my creative juices. It doesn't work well for performing, but for creating nothing works better.
Unless we build theater and performing arts, then we're not going to be creating future patrons. We need to make it accessible.
There's a moment of truth that comes when you are performing, and you are all alone.
Sadhyojata means “creating every moment anew, knowing every moment new.’ We are used to a certain dimension, so this may go beyond you.
One moment it was there, another moment it is gone. One moment we are here, and another moment we have gone. And for this simple moment, how much fuss we make! How much violence, ambition, struggle, conflict, anger, hatred, just for this small moment! Just waiting for the train in a waiting room on a station, and creating so much fuss: fighting, hurting each other, trying to possess, trying to boss, trying to dominate - all that politics. And then the train comes and you are gone forever.
I'll never stop acting, but music is another passion of mine. I just love creating projects in the entertainment field and performing onstage or in front of a camera.
I think my craziest Hollywood moment was performing at the Grammys with Stevie Wonder.
