Sometimes I just revert back to Dusty's kid. I'm trying to chase his ghost, and it's a pretty hard ghost to chase.
I've noticed a lot of people talking about the wealth of roles for powerful women in television lately. And when I look around the room at the women here and I think about the performances that I've watched this year, what I see actually are women who are sometimes powerful and sometimes not. Sometimes sexy and sometimes not. Sometimes honourable and sometimes not. And what I think is new is the wealth of roles for actual women in television and in film. That's what I think is revolutionary and evolutionary and it's what turning me on.
Sometimes we think roles define us. One can emerge beyond the confines of their roles to make an impact on society.
So much of being an actor is trying to force yourself into these roles and sometimes it's a good fit, and sometimes it's not a good fit... you have to get clear about what it is that you do and not try to be a bunch of other people. Not try to be that guy or try to play that part; find the roles that you do well.
The fact that we define ourselves by our roles can be an admirable thing - it's how we build a life and make a living. But it's also precarious. Roles change. Sometimes overnight.
Roles that involved, whether it be training, whether it be physicality, getting skinny, there's some investment. There are roles that you do like that and sometimes there are roles that you do to make sure your family doesn't starve, but then you have to still say, "Is there something I can do with this? Can I do something with this that will be fair to the people watching it and fair to my time as well?" I'm at the point where that luxury of choice is getting more and more for me, absolutely, but it's more primarily roles that are more demanding of me in every way.
We were creating a formula for points racing, and that wasn't good in qualifying for the Chase, and it wasn't good when we got to the Chase. We wanted to change that, and we also wanted to fix a couple things. One of them was that we didn't want to have a bad race or two take somebody out early on in the Chase, which has happened every year.
In other ways, you constantly have to change people's opinion of you as one thing, especially if you want to play different roles. You have to shatter that image sometimes. I've had to do it before with stage roles, to get roles. I'm drawn to kind of darker, misfit things. I would like to, especially in film, play against type and do some heavier stuff. I'm intrigued by projects that deal with problematic people and things.
Sometimes it's easier to chase a title than it is to lead.
Men like to chase and you have to let us chase you. I know. It's insulting. It's frustrating. It's unfortunately the truth.
I think women have long been defined by their roles as procreators and wives, and we're expected to serve, take care of, say 'Yes,' and not ruffle any feathers. Women, in particular, are sometimes not allowed to consider who they are outside of the roles that they play.
The thirst for knowledge is like a piece of ass you know you shouldn't chase; in the end, you chase it just the same.
Indians chase the vision, white men chase the dollar.
Some roles are easier to choose, some roles are more difficult because they are more daring. Sometimes you have to dare.
Life is sometimes like a cat, the more you chase it the faster it runs.
I'm honored people think enough of my playing to chase my sound. Hell, I chase other players' tones all the time.
