I joined Liverpool in 1978. I was the record signing between English clubs.
I was sold by Middlesbrough to Liverpool for a record fee between two English clubs and then won European Cups at Anfield, but I couldn't have been prepared for Rangers. I was a fan as a kid and attended a lot of European nights at Ibrox. I knew the club were big. But not how big.
I want to thank my two English clubs: Liverpool for bringing me to the Premier League and Chelsea for the trophies I won.
I thought I had joined one of the best clubs in the world, one of the biggest names around, and I had, though within a few years, it became clear that I had arrived at one of the worst moments in Liverpool's whole history.
Many clubs wanted to know when I was leaving Inter, and Liverpool was one of those clubs, so people were surprised I chose Galatasaray.
As soon as Liverpool declared their interest in signing me, it was a simple decision to make. A club with Liverpool's history wants you? Come on, you just pack your bags and go. It will be an honour to wear the famous red shirt.
Before signing with Liverpool, I talked to Roberto Firmino about what the club is like and what the city is like. He spoke well of the club and the city and other people who have already visited the city. The information only gave me more motivation to come to Liverpool.
At every point I wished that I was born English. They need to make it colder in here. You could hang meat in this room. But, yeah...I grew up in a very English household. My folks were from Liverpool. I've said this before, but there is nothing more English than an Englishman that no longer lives in England.
I have improved since I joined Liverpool.
There was a lot of criticism in Boston that we weren't going to spend money on the Red Sox after we did the Liverpool transaction. Then there was the fear we wouldn't spend in Liverpool. Hopefully the fans of both clubs will eventually see what we see clearly - that there is nothing to fear from the existence of the other club.
It's important that top clubs don't lose sight of the fact that it's the English Premier League and English players should be involved.
There are not many better clubs to play football for than Liverpool.
At clubs like Liverpool, great players come and go.
If you pray for things, I am proof that they can happen. I want to repay the manager's faith in bringing me back. (on re-signing for Liverpool)
I am a huge fan of the Premier League, but do you think it will maintain its attractiveness if the Champions League is only an affair between English clubs and one or two others?
Liverpool is a club with a big, big, big history, and all the clubs in the world have a big history if the present is not too successful. If you have never had success, then nobody knows how it is, but in Liverpool, everybody knows how it was.
I have played for Ajax, Liverpool and Besiktas in Turkey - all massive clubs in Europe.
