My commitments are for Punjabi films - I want to work for the industry to uplift it.
Punjabi film industry is not yet ready to give change to new actors, but if Punjabi singers, who already have a fan following, enter the industry, it will be a great help to uplift the industry.
It's the Punjabi film industry that sustained me and my family for eight years. It is because of my work in Punjabi films that I was able to survive.
The kind of films being made, that are called experimental, only happens when the industry is confident enough for them to work and I believe that soon we will see a 100 crore blockbuster Punjabi film.
Only the Punjabi music industry has stood the test of time. Bollywood has finished the regional music industry of other languages, but the Punjabi music scene is still flourishing.
I want Punjabi film industry to make it's way into the text books, so that when children read about this industry they should know how it reached to its glory.
I am quite impressed with the growth of Punjabi films. I've witnessed its make-over; it is no more just a regional industry.
In Punjabi, we make romcoms or just comedy films because that's what the audience wants. They want family entertainers. We've tried making action films, but there are no takers for that.
I'm not avoiding the Tamil film industry because I'm making Hindi films. It's just that I'm extremely busy with Bollywood commitments.
Today, they make films where you have to sit for an hour and a half and watch somebody in the process of dying and, for me, that's rather depressing. Films, in the good old days of the golden age of Hollywood, used to want to inspire people and give them uplift. You're paying good money to see a film, and you don't want to leave depressed!
I would love to do better in mainstream Hindi films, but one thing I must say is that my best experience so far has been in the Punjabi film industry, where I've been around for more than 11 years.
It was my dream to work with Badshah and Diljit from the Punjabi industry. I had asked for these two wishes from God and both have been fulfilled.
In the film industry, we work more on the basis of good faith and verbal commitments rather than legalities.
We are not only having a great audience for Punjabi films in north India but we are also seeing growth in other places like Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Indore, etc. And the overseas audiences have always been good for us. Without them we couldn't have taken Punjabi cinema to such heights.
There are a lot of talented Punjabi singers in Bollywood and we are also using a lot of Punjabi songs and reprise versions of these songs in our films and I have also sung quite a few of them.
All this while when I was not seen in Hindi films, I did a lot of regional cinema. I was a part of various Gujarati, Punjabi and Bhojpuri films.
I am going to oblige all my TV commitments, and if films work out, I will make a graceful exit.
