I can't ever see myself stopping DJing or producing.
Yeah, before DJing, judo was my passion. I've always loved it but DJing and producing took over my life and finding time to fit it in was hard once the touring started.
When I moved to London, I was working on music - producing, writing - and that's where I discovered DJing. I started partying every night because I just needed to dance and enjoy music and forget about things, and that's when I started to notice DJing is the best job in the world. I honestly believed I could do it very well.
If I'm DJing a show, I will normally wear the designer I'm DJing for; if I'm DJing a party, I will most likely be wearing very high heels.
I've never been in the studio where it felt like I didn't have a voice. Whether I was co-producing or producing by myself, this community is the one place where I really see democracy at its purest.
I've been DJing mostly, and most DJs end up producing. That's just me.
I've always been a producer - that's how I see myself first. The DJing came second as a way for me to be able to perform.
I played in every single bar and small club in Holland and I've been DJing and producing for more than 12 years.
I see myself starring in and producing major feature films.
The producing side is always a hard thing for me. I look at Flying Lotus and see producers dropping instrumentals, and I think I should do it myself. I just try to be an artist for myself. That way, it's a lot easier.
I think I prefer producing a little more than DJing because you have more freedom, you can make anything you want; it doesn't necessarily have to be four to the floor. You can go more with your mood, or the atmosphere that you're in.
Once I finished 'Eileen,' I wanted to write more novels. I don't see myself stopping any time soon.
I prefer to unwind by DJing. I learned that from Mike D from the Beastie Boys. After a show, he would DJ. Once I saw that, I wanted to do that. And now DJing is like my lifeline. I love the power it represents.
Growing up with my brothers, I was like an accompanying mascot to them. The whole heritage and culture of soundsystems is all in my blood y'know? Then obviously from DJing, I just went onto building my own sound and producing my own music.
The band will always be our number one, and I don't see it ever stopping. We love playing, so why would we want to stop?
For a climber, saying that you are stopping by Everest is like saying that you are stopping by to see God.
Barry recounts all this in prose of often startling beauty. Just as he describes people stopping in the street to look at Roseanne, so I often found myself stopping to look at the sentences he gave her, wanting to pause and copy them down.
