I believe the most intricate plot won't matter much to readers if they don't care about the characters, especially in a series. So I try to focus hard on making each character, whether villain or hero, have an interesting flaw that readers can relate to.

You always know the characters. Everyone knows the characters and they're very well-defined characters, which I always thought was fascinating. Most people who haven't read the book definitely know the characters and reference them.
That's really one thing I really care about as a person is trying to make the people's lives around me better. Whether that's just being a friend and listening or with information I can offer. However it is, that's something I care about and I try to do on a regular basis.
