I try not to put pressure on filmmakers to come up with a big scare at the beginning. I think that helps let the audience settle in and get to know the people they're about to spend 90 minutes with. Once the scarier stuff happens, it's scarier because of that.
There's nothing scarier than silence. A lot of horror movies lean on hits and score to try and create tension, which actually does the opposite. Mainly I got to know about the atmosphere in the East Germany and how people felt, because I never experienced it physically. Living in a country like that, how do you get around it and still keep your dignity? I think it's one of the main questions.
Doing a scene by yourself is scarier - you know you don't have other people to fall back on.
I'm actually kind of more adventurous. I like to go out on the floors and try to be incognito. Because it's more fun to be out there. So - when people do recognize you it's a little bit scarier.
