There's a chunk of myself in every part I play. — © Jay Baruchel
There's a chunk of myself in every part I play.
There's a chunk of myself in every part I play...
Every character brings new light to a different part of myself, which is something I love about every role I get to play.
Of course, every actor has their box and you have to respect and play for it, but I do love challenging myself. I love every role to be new, and I always like to bring a freshness to every character I play.
I can't bear the thought of retirement, and I haven't prepared myself for it. I don't play bridge, and I don't play golf. I do play tennis, but you can't do that every day of the week.
I make a playlist for every character I portray. Music plays a huge part in helping me understand a character. Every time I get a new role, I will take a chunk of time to just sit and listen to a bunch of songs and select the ones that make sense in my mind for that character. I can't even explain how much it helps me.
I kinda taught myself how to play guitar, and I still play to this day. It's become a pretty big part of my life.
I don't play for myself. I play for my teammates and play for the people that helped me get to where I am. I know they're watching me every week, and I want to play for them. It's just in my heart, and that's who I am.
A big way that I express myself is through what I wear and how I present myself. I think that's an important part of the characters that I play.
When I play the clarinet, I am 100 percent myself. It is as if it is part of my body. I can play whatever I think. Let me just read a melody and make it as sweet as I can.
I've put out a lot of stuff that just confused and alienated people: a huge chunk of songs that were verbal and musical challenges to myself, thoughts I was keeping myself busy with, nothing I had any intention of anybody grasping onto.
I look at problems as opportunities and use every person, every incident, and every encounter as an opportunity to show a more loving part of myself.
Every man must play the part of his ambition. If you are trying to be a successful man, you must play the part.
It's hard to say what you learn acting a part. You find bits and pieces of yourself that are inside the character you play. You locate the relatable aspects of that character to your own life. So, in a way, every part you play forces you to discover things about yourself you might not have learned otherwise.
I did The Seagull, the Chekhov play, on Broadway, a couple of years ago, and I had done it in London, and I became completely obsessed with the character, Nina, that I played in that. She's an actress. I couldn't find a play after that, that I wanted to do, because I couldn't think of doing anything else. Every part is a disappointment, once you've done that part.
I feel like part of the reason I play basketball so much is it just feels good. In the summer I play every single day.
My job is to make myself available to play to the best of my ability. Mentally, I've got to stay ready to play every day.
