Do we need a top-flight quarterback? Do human beings need air to breath?
The need for love and intimacy is a fundamental human need, as primal as the need for food, water, and air.
We need Joy as we need air. We need Love as we need water. We need each other as we need the earth we share.
You know I need a dream Like I need my breath We need to take the life Before we get the death You know I need your love Like I need the light Yes I need the chance Can it be tonight?
There is no need to suppose that human beings differ very much one from another; but it is true that the ones who come out on top are the ones who have been trained in the hardest school.
If we're going to achieve compassion in the machines and also feel safe with the machines, to raise machines with human-like values, we need to make them human-like by simulating, or perhaps eventually imitating, human beings in high accuracy from top to bottom.
Maybe we need to look upon technologies and social networks as things that come out of us, not things that lead us. We can be on top of these things instead of them bein' on top of us as human beings.
Human beings need unhappiness at least as much as they need happiness.
We have this thing as human beings: we have a profound need for story. That's what kids need.
The need to find meaning...is as real as the need for trust and for love, for relations with other human beings.
Human beings need pleasure the way they need vitamins.
We need art. We've been telling stories since the beginning. As human beings, we need it for our survival.
Human beings need to belong to a tradition and equally need to know about the world in which they find themselves.
A person is a person through other persons. None of us comes into the world fully formed. We would not know how to think, or walk, or speak, or behave as human beings unless we learned it from other human beings. We need other human beings in order to be human. I am because other people are. A person is entitled to a stable community life, and the first of these communities is the family.
Beauty matters. It is not just a subjective thing but a universal need of human beings. If we ignore this need we find ourselves in a spiritual desert.
Caring can be learned by all human beings, can be worked into the design of every life, meeting an individual need as well as a pervasive need in society.
Poems have always been a place for questions for me. Not answers. And I have a lot of questions these days. One of the reasons I've felt so connected to poetry throughout the years is because it's the only art form that has breath built into it. And I need that breath now. I need that breath so much. So, yes, it is a refuge for me. Absolutely.
