It's an interesting door opening, this use of sonic signalling - using sound to alert us in a more subtle way than a beep.
Sound is a subtle form of speech and then more subtle than sound is silence and that's like the realm of being.
Right now my taste is going more for things that are organic where the people are using all the sonic possibilities in interesting ways.
The job is not to succeed but fail more interesting than the last time—- in a more subtle fashion or in a more intriguing way.
I hate the beep beep of the car, when I put in motion and I have not fasten my seat belt. From how annoying this sound is to me every morning, I understand immediately how the day will be.
I come prepared with the white suit and stethoscope, Listen to your heartbeat, delete beep beep BEEP. Your insurance is high, but my price is cheap.
Every morning I hear the alarm, it's like "BEEP BEEP BEEP" For second I'm like, "I could get used to that, just dream I'm in a techno club, or something."
It means basically I'm using the synthesizer more to change the sounds of other things rather than to use it as the source of the sound.
More often than not, whenever gossip has been written about me, the gossip is more interesting than the reality. I know some public figures hate gossip, but personally I like it because it makes my life sound more glamorous and interesting than it really is.
I want the music to stand out a little bit more than many other bands do. I still have some stuff where I don't use the high hat, and I don't use any crash cymbals. It just makes for an interesting sound because you don't really notice it when it's not there, but if it was there, you would definitely hear it.
Every kid has a laptop; everyone can make music, so in order to stand out, I think it's important to find that sonic identity, I think my sonic identity - and mine is finding these weird sounds that may not necessarily sound that musical, and make them sound musical.
It's very hard to take a character out of nothing, and put a hook on it, especially because it's only sonic. Futurama is a sonic world, and everyone's attention is focused on that sound and that little cartoon image. You can change it.
If flies are a great model, they're a great model for flies. These animals, you know, they're not like us. We don't fly. We don't have a compound eye. I don't think we process sensory information the same way. The muscles that they use are just incredibly much more sophisticated and interesting than the muscles we use.
Any actor who's onstage... at least this is what I do... I'm always using 120% on whatever the heck I'm doing. I have to make an impression with all the bursts of things I do in this show... taking the picture, shutting the door, opening the door... as long as I'm making people laugh at those moments, I feel like I'm accomplishing something.
I wrote my sonic meditations and started using them with students. I took a bunch of UCSD students out to Joshua Tree and we did the sonic meditations on the boulders.
Oooh, fashion, we are the goon squad and were coming to town, beep beep.
Although music appeals simply to the emotions, and represents no definite images in itself, we are justified in using any language which may serve to convey to others our musical expressions. Words will often pave the way for the more subtle operations of music, and unlock the treasures which sound alone can rifle, and hence the eternal popularity of song.
