One drop of eternity is of greater weight than a vast ocean of finite things. — © Karl Barth
One drop of eternity is of greater weight than a vast ocean of finite things.
What do you have to surrender? A drop has to dissolve into the ocean to become the ocean. And a drop cannot be greater than the ocean, can it? So what is the surrendering? It is the surrendering of our conditioning, of our ego and the artificial barriers we have built around us.
The potential infinite means nothing other than an undetermined, variable quantity, always remaining finite, which has to assume values that either become smaller than any finite limit no matter how small, or greater than any finite limit no matter how great.
Just as every drop of the ocean carries the taste of the ocean, so does every moment carry the taste of eternity.
We are like a drop of water in a vast, divine ocean, distinct yet immersed in something much larger than ourselves. It’s only when we experience our connection to infinity that we’re able to dream powerfully.
If God is vast and boundless as the ocean, how can a tiny drop like man imagine what He is?
We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.
My life amounts to no more than one drop in a limitless ocean. Yet what is any ocean, but a multitude of drops?
We realize that what we are accomplishing is a drop in the ocean. But if this drop were not in the ocean, it would be missed.
Listen, O drop, give yourself up without regret, and in exchange gain the Ocean. Listen, O drop, bestow upon yourself this honor, and in the arms of the Sea be secure. Who indeed should be so fortunate? An Ocean wooing a drop! In God's name, in God's name, sell and buy at once! Give a drop, and take this Sea full of pearls.
It's only a drop in the ocean - but the ocean wouldn't be the same without that drop.
You are not just the drop in the ocean. You are the mighty ocean in the drop.
The ocean is a large drop; a drop is a small ocean.
The difficulties in the study of the infinite arise because we attempt, with our finite minds, to discuss the infinite, assigning to it those properties which we give to the finite and limited; but this... is wrong, for we cannot speak of infinite quantities as being the one greater or less than or equal to another.
Every drop of water in an ocean contains the flavor of the whole ocean. So too, every moment in time contains the flavor of eternity, if you could live in that moment, but most people do not live in the moment which is the only time they really have.
We always imagine eternity as something beyond our conception, something vast, vast! But why must it be vast?
It is important to remember that the ocean's resources are finite. The commitment these kids are making here today is a clear and compelling call to all of us to pay attention to our ocean.
