A Quote by Maggie Gyllenhaal

I do seem to have a bit of a predilection for movies that say something transgressive. — © Maggie Gyllenhaal
I do seem to have a bit of a predilection for movies that say something transgressive.
I am not by nature the kind of creator who is transgressive in order to be transgressive.
I grew up on certain movies, particular movies that said something to me as a kid from Missouri, movies that showed me places I'd yet traveled, or different cultures, or explained something, or said something in a better way than I could ever say. I wanted to find the movies like that.
I love the art house, and when I say the art house, I don't just mean little, independent movies but movies that really aim to be about something and say something and I love those movies.
There are plenty of movies that you need to chew on a bit. Movies that you return to and see something different in the second time around.
Agency over one's sexual self - and the articulation of that kind of agency - might seem transgressive to readers who don't expect it in a woman's text.
I grew up on particular movies that said something to me as a kid from Missouri, movies that showed me places I'd yet traveled, or different cultures, or explained something, or said something in a better way than I could ever say. I wanted to find the movies like that. It was less about a career than finding the films I wanted to see.
When I go to the movies, I do like to see things that surprise me, a little bit, in ways that seem truthful to the world that we live in.
I really like transgressive characters that have an alternate world view. I've actually written a fair number of kids movies, and I'll insert these kid-friendly articulate sociopaths who are usually yelling at the children for their own benefit.
If something touches me, I cry. That's it. I'm a bit raw, a bit rubbish, really. Often, a director will say to me, 'I don't think this is a scene where your character cries.' And all I can say is, good luck with that!
Everybody's got a lot to their personalities. You're not just one element. There are some days you want something that can be a bit stricter or a bit more disciplined or something a bit more floaty and a bit freer.
I think it's absurd to believe that movies should look like paintings and say something like serious books say something.
I want to keep making movies, hopefully with some nominations, if I'm lucky! Movies that make people feel something, where they walk away and say, "Gosh, she's different."
I've made movies where people say it's their favourite, but they don't take it seriously because it just didn't seem to break through commercially.
If you pay attention to the movies they will tell you what people desire and fear. Movies are hardly ever about what they seem to be about. Look at a movie that a lot of people love, and you will find something profound, no matter how silly the film may be.
The blowing thing is something that you either have a predilection for or not. And I don't have that thing. It was just unsanitary. I couldn't do it. I am a complete germaphobe.
There's something about the human brain, that it actually has a predilection towards negativity, which served us really well when we lived in an environment that was very threatening.
