The trouble is that nonviolence is so often defined as refusal to fight, and that is the American definition of cowardice. In fact, marching unarmed against the guns and dogs of the police requires more courage than does aggression. The perverted idea of manhood coming from the barrel of a gun is what keeps people from understanding nonviolence.
It often requires more courage to suffer in silence than to rebel, more courage not to strike back than to retaliate, more courage to be silent than to speak.
My generation has failed miserably. We've failed because of lack of courage and vision. It requires more courage to keep the peace than to go to war.

When I became a soldier, I was drafted in 1937, and instead of being released two years later, I had to stay on because the war had started in the meantime. I was a soldier for more than eight years, as long a time as I was Chancellor.
It requires more courage to suffer than to die.
It takes more courage to examine the dark corners of your own soul than it does for a soldier to fight on the battlefield.
It often requires more courage to dare to do right than to fear to do wrong.
Veganism is about nonviolence:
nonviolence to other sentient beings;
nonviolence to yourself;
nonviolence to the earth.
Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.
I could not have the honour of being a German soldier because of my imprisonment in the First World War. And in this world war the Fuehrer refuses to allow me to serve as a soldier.
It often requires more courage to read some books than it does to fight a battle.
