Miyazaki has a great talent, but I really struggle every time I create a new film and am far from Miyazaki.
I have a top 10 list of my favorite movies of all time, and just for the sake of not having my top 5 be entirely Miyazaki films, I had to pick one. So, right now, my favorite Miyazaki film is probably 'Princess Mononoke.'
Of course I'm happy when people mention his name and mine in the same breath. It's like a dream. But I know they are overpraising 'Your Name' because I am absolutely not at Miyazaki's level. Honestly, I really don't want Miyazaki to see it because he will see all its flaws.
There's no such thing as a bad Miyazaki film.
I believe once you watch a Miyazaki film, you'll get hooked.
You don't want to be imitating his style. Every anime-maker is thinking, 'I can't be too like Miyazaki.'
One of the other things that I love about Miyazaki's films, is that when he sets a film in Europe, it's not a documentary - it doesn't really look like Europe, but it's something he internalises, synthesises and weaves into his work. I love seeing that cross-cultural exchange.
Miyazaki is a genius. He is the legend.
I love the work of Hayao Miyazaki. 'My Neighbor Totoro' and 'Castle in the Sky' are two of the great films that he's made that I just love.
I don't think anybody can replace Mr. Miyazaki.
The title 'Spirited Away' could refer to what Disney has done on a corporate level to the revered Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki's epic and marvelous new anime fantasy.
You'll see why, in animation circles, Miyazaki himself is considered one of the gods.
Miyazaki's films in Japan are bigger than Titanic. He's an incredible rock star there. In the US, they don't do as well.
I have never really sensed any of Miyazaki's artistic influence on Ando. If there is an influence, it's more in his attitude to his work.
I'm a huge Hayao Miyazaki fan. He might be my favorite director of all time - the beauty that he sees in the world and the attention to detail. I try and focus on that while making music: trying to use as many real instruments as possible, have it feel as tactile and tangible as possible.
Miyazaki movies were what I was raised on. I've watched them since I was very young, and I've been greatly shaped by them.
I really like dating stories, like in Betty and Veronica comics; I like David Lynch and H.P. Lovecraft for the dark gut-wrenching stuff, and I'm inspired by Miyazaki's films for the subtle heart-warming moments, as well as the moments that blew up my imagination.
