Though not into films, my family was associated with films. My grandparents financed films. They didn't like me getting into films. But, destiny willed it so.
I'm interested in seeing films that confront me with new things, with films that make me question myself, with films that help me to reflect on subjects that I hadn't thought about before, films that help me progress and advance.
When I made 'Satyamev Jayate,' which is a typical Hindi action masala film, people told me it won't work because only real cinema worked. But it was a hit.
I think distribution has become a lot harder. With the whole explosion of digital video, there's just a lot more people making films. Distributors have a lot more choice. I do think there's an audience out there for small films. It's obvious to me what the studios do: they've co-opted independent film. They all have their independent arm. They can afford to crush the competition.
