There are days when I go out on the court and I feel like I can't miss a ball.
There are periods when you feel really good. You feel the ball is bigger. The court is larger. You feel like you can't miss. And then there are periods when you feel, 'OK, I'm not feeling great.' But I still need to try to find a way to win.
If you go out and practice super hard and then you go play in the game, it's going to be a lot more natural for you. You'll be able to catch the ball and think fast and start making plays, making people miss and turning it into the next phase of the play rather than just catching the ball and being surprised and happy that you caught the ball.
I don't mind hitting the ball bad, but when I feel like I've hit the ball pretty good for four days and shoot an 81, it's not golf.
I had some moments in my career where I'd walk on the court, and I look around and feel, 'Oh, I'm the best one out here.' But then you go on another court, and you could be the worst player out there.
I feel like I'm strong enough that I don't have to do anything to turn on the ball. When I do that-when I'm ready to take the ball up the middle, when I'm willing to go the other way-that's when I can turn on the ball.
I feel good doing it. It's not like guys are stripping me at half-court or I'm just losing the ball dribbling. I think I'm handling the ball pretty well, just trying to make good passes, man.
I don't miss the limelight, not at all. I'm just more comfortable out of it. I don't miss 'Monday Night Football.' I just don't miss it. I'm lucky. When I stopped playing, I didn't miss it. I feel blessed that it's not been a problem. I have great memories. I feel really lucky.
If I don't run for a few days, I feel like my insides are dirty. The run kind of scrubs my veins and arteries, and then all starts to feel right with the world. I'm not one of those fanatical people that if I miss a run, I go nuts. But when it's something you love, you make sure you have the time to do it.
Getting married is great, and I feel really good away from the court, and my private life and stuff is good. But you still need to train and work hard. Like, I didn't go on a honeymoon after we got married; I went to Barcelona and trained for 10 days to get ready for the clay-court season. It's been good, but you still have to put the work in.
When I'm on the court, I feel at peace, really. It feels like my home. I'm always thinking of something creative to do, like trick shots or something like that. It's just something about the basketball court that touches me; it makes me feel like nothing is wrong on the court.
I feel like doulas put the ball back in the mom's court. They trust you to normalize the high drama.
Let me go back to a comfortable analogy for me - sports... basketball. I use it because you're naive if you don't see the national full-court press picking away right now: A good point guard drives through a full court press, protecting the ball, keeping her eye on the basket... and she knows exactly when to pass the ball so that the team can WIN.
How to hit home runs: I swing as hard as I can, and I try to swing right through the ball... The harder you grip the bat, the more you can swing it through the ball, and the farther the ball will go. I swing big, with everything I've got. I hit big or I miss big. I like to live as big as I can.
Normal adult shopping is something I will never actually do, because it's no more possible for me to go shopping like normal adults do than it is for a man with no legs to wake up one day and walk. I can't miss shopping like you'd miss things you once had. I miss it in a different way. I miss it like you would miss a train.
Some days on court, you just don't feel it; the other players are playing too good. It's not always going to go your way.
If I miss one day of practice, I notice it. If I miss two days, the critics notice it. If I miss three days, the audience notices it.
