A reputation is really hard to live down.
I've got this reputation for shooting one take which is a wonderful reputation to have but it's hard to live up to.
I feel like if you sit down and have an assistant engineer and a producer in a top-notch studio and everyone sets up all the mikes perfect, all of a sudden it's really hard to live that melancholy song. It's hard to really live it in the moment.
I get to live down my reputation for being cantankerous if I slowly evolve towards being a really good live show.
Because at the end of the day, you really only have one reputation and one shot, and once you kind of get that bad reputation and don't have some good results, then it's kind of over. It's really hard to build it back.
I couldn't live my reputation down - all right then, I'd live up to it.
I was doing the 'Vogue' fashion awards when I was 16, live on VH1. I was coming down the steps, and I'm a really hard walker. I hadn't had a mistake yet in my career. Everything had been perfect. So I come down the steps on live TV, and I slip. I didn't fall, but you could see the look on my face. I was mortified. I was devastated.
Mistakes quickly pile up and coalesce into a reputation, and a reputation is hard to shake.
A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well.
Reputation is seeming; character is being. Reputation is manufactured; character is grown. Reputation is your photograph; There is a vast difference between character and reputation. Reputation is what men think we are; character is what God knows us to be. Reputation is seeming; character is being. Reputation is the breath of men; character is the inbreathing of the eternal God. One may for a time have a good reputation and a bad character, or the reverse ; but not for long.
A reputation as a hard worker is a good reputation to have.
Especially being a woman of color, sometimes it's hard for to put our foot down. You work with a lot of men, and they'll be like, "She has Joyner the best reputation".
You can never take your reputation back. There really is nothing as powerful as a good reputation.
It took time to really build myself a reputation as a good live performer, a musician and an artist.
How hard it is for people to live without someone to look down upon-really to look down upon. It is not just that they feel cheated out of someone to hate. It is that they are compelled to look more closely into themselves and what they don't like about themselves.
Living down your own past was hard enough. You shouldn't have to live down someone else's.
I don't like staying in hotels. I like to be in my own bed. San Diego as a city is really awesome. The only hard part of it for me is that I'm away from my family and my house. But as far as shooting down there, we get amazing locations, and the crew is really, really stellar down there. They are really fun.
