Emotional, physical, and spiritual estrangement and ontological and religious doubt inform my personality, my thoughts, and my characters, which are, more often than not, masks for my own being and my being in the world - a world that frightens me insofar as I don't understand it.
One of the main reasons I write fiction is to try to understand what life is like for people other than myself, to try to see the world through my characters' eyes. I often find that I'm able to understand certain emotional truths about my own life by exploring things from different vantages.
I think that being alive is intense for most beings in some way. Even the process of being born is an intense one, and coming to see and understand and experience the physical world, and all that goes along with being a physical being, and experiencing all of these different forms of loss throughout life.

The spiritual differs from the religious in being able to endure isolation. Pain - physical, emotional and spiritual pain - is more than just a condition that needs to be silenced, numbed or "fixed." And no matter how simply a truth is stated, only those who have walked the path of understanding and evolution on their own can know and understand it authentically.
