Growing up, I loved the imagery I saw from America as it celebrated being the land of the free and home of the brave.
We live in a country that talks about being the home of the brave and the land of the free, and we have the highest incarceration rate in the world.
You know what really made me sick? I was in Washington, D.C. at another time reading in a paper where the U.S. gives Byron de la Beckwith - the man who is charged with murdering Medgar Evers - they were giving him so much money for some land and I ask "Is this America?" We can no longer ignore the fact that America is NOT the "land of the free and the home of the brave."
I hope our people hold tight to the notion that we do not have to be a fear-ridden country focused on restrictions, but rather that we remain the land of the free and home of the brave.
