The team aspect of football and just playing quarterback, having the ball in your hands, having to make the plays, that was definitely something I loved.
I loved curling and I loved the social aspect of it, the team. It's like if you had the same golf foursome for a long time, or if you're a bridge player, or a beer-league hockey team. You start to look forward to that time together and camaraderie, and having something that you do just for yourself.
I've always considered myself a crunch-time player. I just love having the ball in my hands. Everyone in the arena knows the ball is supposed to be in your hands and you still make it. It's the odds. I love the odds.
I like having the ball in my hands and being able to make plays, but I think my shooting is an asset, too.
I'm used to having the ball, man. So, not really having the ball in my hands... it's just me trying to find different ways to impact the game.
Having more freedom to bring the ball up and have the ball in my hands, just trusting me with the ball, that was one of the big things. My rookie year, I didn't have that. Just having that trust in me, just working and them seeing that I'm getting better at it, that I'm capable, that was kind of like a changing point for me.
The quarterback is the leader of the team and the quarterback is the one that has the ball in his hands every single play.
You want to go out there and do what's best for the team, help your team move the ball down the field, make plays, help them win football games.
I've never had a quarterback run-driven offense. We don't run designed plays where we snap the ball directly to the quarterback and he's just running it. If the defense is cheating and overcompensating for your running back, then the quarterback needs to keep (it) honest.
It's a game of failure [softball]. Everybody would play, that was easy and everyone's not playing because it is so tough. But it's a matter of keep plugging away, keep working hard, believing in yourself and it is a team sport and there is nothing better than being out there, having a ball in your hand, playing the game that you love and ultimately that's what it comes down is having fun and enjoying it.
You see receivers getting open, the O-line blocking, and when that's happening, playing quarterback is a lot of fun, man. You get to sit back, and deliver the football, and let your guys make plays.
Having, and building, a team that plays good football is important.
You've got to turn over every stone; you've got to look for every advantage. You need to make sure you're doing everything you possibly can, not just on the field but off it, to give your team an advantage - from having a sleep expert coming to talk to your team to having an independent analysis of your team done.
With the quarterback position, because you're touching the ball every single snap, you want to make a play and you just have to guard against that. It's about making the plays that come to you, not necessarily chasing after plays.
To be a point guard, to run the team and have the ball in my hands and try to make plays for others - that's who I am.
Having the ball in my hand all the time and making plays, it was bound to come to a point where I knew where to get the ball to, who and when to give the ball to somebody. Just making the right decisions when I have it.
That's why I play football... to be the quarterback, to be the guy with the ball in his hands.
