Why be second best at anything? — © Paul Heyman
Why be second best at anything?
There is only one real sin and that is to persuade oneself that the second best is anything but second best.
I was the second-best player in high school. I was the second pick in the draft. I've been second in the MVP voting three times. I came in second in the Finals. I'm tired of being second. I'm not going to settle for that. I'm done with it.
Why can't a seven-foot guy play a doctor? Why can't I be a teacher? Why can't I be a football coach? Why can't I be a cab driver? Anything. Anything else than that. I can cry. I can do those things that they think the big guys can't do. So just give us a chance.
A lot of my best parts I've been the second choice for, so you never get too egotistical about anything.
Your cowardly self-delusions about “love” when you know as well as I do that there’s never been anything between us but contempt and distrust and a terrible sickly dependence on each other’s weakness- that’s why. That’s why I couldn’t stop laughing about the Inability to Love, and that’s why I can’t stand to let you touch me, and that’s why I’ll never again believe in anything you think, let alone anything you say
I don't think for a second that I'm the best at anything, but I know I'm really good at quite a lot of things because I work hard.
Human beings are hardwired by however many millions or billions of years to orient toward their own survival. That's why we're tribal people. That's why we're prejudiced people. That's why we treat women as second-class citizens, that's why we are homophobic, and that's why we make religion a weapon to prove we're superior to other people.
You get one go round in this life. Why are you going to settle for second best when you can get everything you want out of it?
I like to go out there and perform my best. I like to be the best, I like to shine, I like to be in the spotlight, so I like anything that sparkles. Anything that glitters, that's why I'm into rhinestones. Superstars wear sequins, so I wear sequins and rhinestones.
I took in a breath. "What's the one thing you'd do," I asked. "if you could do anything?" Pass," he said. For a second I was sure I'd heard wrong. "What?" He cleared his throat. "I said, I pass." Why?" He turned his head and looked at me. "Because." Because why?" Because I just do.
Wretched, ephemeral race, children of chance and tribulation, why do you force me to tell you the very thing which it would be most profitable for you not to hear? The very best thing is utterly beyond your reach: not to have been born, not to be, to be nothing. However, the second best thing for you is: to die soon.
Why should we ever continue anything if the first parts are the best?
Why would you want to stay manager and be second-guessed by me when you can come up into the front-office and be one of the second-guessers?
The most important thing is to be successful on the field. Being second in the world is an unbelievable achievement. But for me, as a coach, you want to be the best - you get nothing for being second. We want to be the best in our field.
Any guy, even imaginary, would just feel like second best. Second best to what? I don't even have an image of the perfect boyfriend. I just know he must exist. Because I have all these feelings-love, longing, wanting to be touched, dreaming of being kissed-yet no one to focus them on.
The best thing to do, if you really want to be good, is drink vodka all day, from the second you get up to the second they say, "Cut!"
