I do not over-intellectualise the production process. I try to keep it simple: Tell the damned story.
Sometimes, it's better to stop thinking and trust your instincts. That's what I used to do when I first started making music, but as time goes on, you can sometimes over-intellectualise things.
But the answer to how to live is to stop thinking about it. And just to live. But you're doing that anyway. However you intellectualise it, you still just live.
The theme of the diary is always the personal, but it does not mean only a personal story: it means a personal relationship to all things and people. The personal, if it is deep enough, becomes universal, mythical, symbolic; I never generalize, intellectualise. I see, I hear, I feel. These are my primitive elements of discovery. Saying “I'll try” means our soul isn't really in it. We tell ourselves “I'll try” when our inflated egos won't come clean and admit that we're actually not all that determined. We can't overcome obstacles with the words “I'll try.” As Yoda, the philosopher in the Star Wars movies, says, “Do, or do not. There is no 'try.
When you try to portray people's lives, you try to make sure you don't portray them as clowns and that you give them a level of dignity. You don't try to change their persona, but you try to understand that they had unique problems, set in a century that you don't live.
But just because it burns doesn't mean you're gonna die. You've gotta get up and try, try, try.
Try, try, try, and keep on trying is the rule that must be followed to become an expert in anything.
