Not all circus animals are unhappy.
When children see animals in a circus, they learn that animals exist for our amusement. Quite apart from the cruelty involved in training and confining these animals, the whole idea that we should enjoy the humiliating spectacle of an elephant or lion made to perform circus tricks shows a lack of respect for the animals as individuals.
Cirque du Soleil distinguished itself by being a circus with no animals. Before then, circus was partly about showing how man can tame other species.

We have to be aggressive when those we stick up for have no voice. I don't consider it radical to say cruelty is wrong and that animals should be respected. I consider it radical to eat corpses, put electrodes in animals' heads, make elephants live in chains in the circus, and poison animals we consider a nuisance.

When you see the numbers who come to the circus, you understand that we don't get that by abusing animals.
But for the use of physical punishment by, and fear of their oppressors, animals would never be a part of a circus.
Words are as recalcitrant as circus animals, and the unskilled trainer can crack his whip at them in vain.
The circus was born with animals, horses at the start. This is part of our cultural heritage. It's a whole, with clowns and acrobats.
In spite of what moralists say, the, animals are scarcely less wicked or less unhappy than we are ourselves. The arrogance of the strong, the servility of the weak, low rapacity, ephemeral pleasure purchased by great effort, death preceded by long suffering, all belong to the animals as they do to men.
When I was 18 I worked with the Ringling Brothers circus, taking care of menagerie animals. I used to rather deliberately risk my life with the big cats.
I love animals, and I was always attracted to the idea of being a zoo veterinarian or a veterinarian with the circus.
A circus here, a circus there; here today, gone tomorrow. Big Brother watching you. Fear eats the soul.
