I like a lot of the new artists, but there's only one I can name that stands out to me the most: Kendrick Lamar.
Whether it's Kendrick Lamar or J. Cole or Common there are a lot of artists, especially rappers, who come from a background with a faith-based substance, and it's time for that substance to be celebrated and appreciated.
My pops put me on to Jay-Z and Kanye, and my discoveries would be like Future and Kendrick Lamar. I turned my pops on to Kendrick, Young Thug. I feel my mom made me play the Isley Brothers and real, real old music.
[on Kendrick Lamar] The new king of the West Coast.
I don't live in this soul music bubble. I love Young Thug, Drake, Kendrick Lamar. I even heard that Kendrick was a fan of my music. Hopefully there's a door open for us to do music together. He's one of my favorite artists. I love Jazmine Sullivan, Lianne la Havas, Usher, Ginuwine. It goes further than classic soul.
I would say [Lamar] Kendrick, it`s always fun to see what happens when Kendrick takes the stage. And my two oldest kids are huge fans of him.
I really like Kendrick Lamar.
I like Kanye and Kendrick Lamar.
Kendrick Lamar deserves a Grammy. He's one of the biggest, most influential rappers of my generation.
I really like Kendrick Lamar. I'm still a Talib Kweli fan, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Common Sense - people who say things that are relevant to everyday life. I don't pay attention to artists that talk about throwing money away and the car that they drive.
I am going to make singles with other artists and put those out there - I'd love to work with Bruno Mars, Drake, Kendrick Lamar. But when somebody buys a Tee Grizzley album, all they're going to hear is Tee Grizzley.
There are artists that are using computers in all genres - Kendrick Lamar's music is electronic-made, and Taylor Swift is the same thing. There's a lot of pop music, underground music, and music for films made with computers. In that sense, it's not going to go away.
I'm happy to have been around greatness like Kendrick Lamar.
I think at some point there may be artists who will get fed up, and they deliberately want to use their art as a means to rock the waves a little bit. And instead of doing the status quo, they'll deliberately go out to really make a change. I think Kendrick Lamar is an example of that.
Me and Kendrick Lamar have had conversations for years back and forth, so that's my dude.
I've never loved the name "Rainbow" - it seems like a name you'd give to your stuffed unicorn - but I really like having an unusual name. It stands out. And it made me feel like it was okay to stand out. To be different.
It was actually working with Kendrick Lamar that pushed me further into the act of songwriting, specifically.
