During the inception of 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai,' we studied the characters and the script in depth so that we could imbibe the essence of it in our performance.
I am privileged to have been a part of 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai.'
I can't even begin to describe what kind of a response 'Humsafar' got. Personally, I feel my other show, 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai,' was better, but it didn't match the success of 'Humsafar.'
At the beginning, when I did 'Yeh Saali Hai Zindagi,' I got a lot of love, which is ever increasing.
Duniya main Larkiyon sey ziadah koi ahmaq nahi hota.. khush fahmi ka aghaaz aur ikhtatam hum par hi hota hai. Sari umar hum mohabbat ki baysaakhiyoN ka intezaar karti rahti hain...Takay Zindagi ki race shuroo karsakain.. Humain mard kay baray main yeh khush fehmi hoti hai kah woh aaiga.. Koi hum sey hamdardi karay tou humain khush fehmi honay lagti hai ... Koi humari taareef karay tou woh humain apni mutthi main Qaid nazar aanay lagta hai... Koi humaray saath waqt guzarat tou humaray hosh o hawas apnay thikanay par nahi rahtay.. hum main MATURITY tab aati hai jab humain REJECT kia jaata hai.
Everything I do is gauged under the shadow of 'Dil Chahta Hai.' Even 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' and 'Rock On,' which are very urban films. So I am always seen through that lens.
I have grown up watching films like 'Dil To Pagal Hai,' and 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,' where all the leading characters had a substantial part to play.
A good content always allows me to reach the depth of the characters, and thus, the performance looks more relatable and truthful.
We were brought up in the school that teaches: You do what the script tells you. Deliver the goods without comment. Live it-do it-or shut up. After all, the writer is what's important. If the script is good and you don't get in its way, it will come off okay. I never discussed a script with Spence [Spencer Tracy]; we just did it. The same with Hank [Henry Fonda] in On Golden Pond. Naturally and unconsciously we joined into what I call a musical necessity-the chemistry that brings out the essence of the characters and the work.
In terms of my relationships with a lot of the adult characters, when I was working with Harrison, it wasn't like a verbal agreement, but we both understood that because there was this constant tension between our characters, we couldn't say "Cut" and start acting normal. We had to keep an essence of that relationship in our characters off screen which is really important.
No matter what you're doing, whether it's a makeup tutorial or an interview or a lip sync, performance is the essence of drag. It is gender performance. Being able to produce a performance is what a superstar has to do.
The script in many ways is limiting and novel is liberating. You get to go into the heads of your characters and their background and have fun with them; something you are discouraged from doing with a script. With the novel, I can tell you what the characters are thinking, I can tell you their view of the world, background information, things I wouldn't dare touch in the script.
I mean when I was working shall we say with Disney, you know they sent me the script for the film Hercules and I had to imagine what all the characters looked like. And to develop those characters, so nothing exists visually when I get the script.
I have been part of some fantastic shows and played great characters, including a double role in 'Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi' and a negative one in 'Sanjivani' because I was bored of playing positive characters.
Kissing making out on the ground Bali Hai Bali Hai Bali Hai!
After 'Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai,' 'Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hai' and 'Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai,' my presence as a director will be felt. These three films have been very successful and 'Badhaai Ho Badhaai' is going to be the climax. My work is finally recognised.
I am happy that a script like 'Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai' is character-driven and has a lot of freshness to it.
