I've had my elbows operated on, both my knees are shot, I've got stitches everywhere.
I was operated on facially so much when I was young, and I had massive amounts of stitches.
I remember in my very first fitting, costume designer Patricia Norris gave me a garment with these intricate stitches - stitches over stitches, because it had been repaired so many times. Once I put it on, she told me that it belonged to an actual slave woman. My heart just stopped. Each one of the stitches had a story, you know. Just recognizing this period I was going to be dancing with was a "come to Jesus" moment.
Of course I've had a bunch of broken bones, sprains and I've had five or six concussions, with three serious ones. A bloke once yelled out: 'You've got chubby knees.' I was 19. I've had a real complex about my knees ever since.
You may get skinned knees and elbows, but it's worth it if you score a spectacular goal.
If I stayed a football player, my career would have been over 20 years ago. As it is, my knees are shot. I found I got the same good feeling in acting that I had in sports, but I found I could have a more profound impact on people.
Everything I had been taught to regard as a vice - and I still regard them as vices - under Thatcherism was in fact a virtue: Greed, selfishness, no care for the weaker, sharp elbows, sharp knees.

I was teased about Indian food and the colour of my skin and why my knees and elbows were dark.

I've played hockey most my life and I've never been badly injured...Three weeks into curling I've got bone chips in both my elbows. I still can't lean on a table. I've even got curling injuries, believe it or not, just from falling on my arse.
She sat down in a weed patch, her elbows on her knees, and kept her eyes on the small sterious world of the ground. In the shade and sun of grass blade forests, small living things had their metropolis.
