Trying to explain music is like trying to dance architecture.
In theater and dance, I was trying to win someone's approval, trying to get in, trying to be good. It felt out of my control, whereas music suddenly felt like this free expression. It was fun.
Trying to explain what community is to someone who's never experienced it is like trying to explain what an artichoke tastes like.

By trying to give an artistic approach through my book I stepped unwillingly into other fields. I've never had a problem with the old truism about dancing to architecture. I think you can dance to architecture. There's some pretty funky architecture to dance to.
I find myself trying to explain more, and explain the perspective of my mentality, or the mentality I'm trying to convey.
I'm not trying to compete with any other revival soul acts. It's just Leon Bridges, a kid from Fort Worth trying to be himself and give people hope. It's great music to dance to and just love.
If something can be explored or illuminated that would have been difficult to verbalize, that to me is what a film should be. It's like trying to explain what a piece of music is like. You can't do it.
