I don't need MMA, but I love fighting. Those are very different things.
MMA is not jiu-jitsu. MMA is not boxing. MMA is not wrestling. It's a different kind of style of punching and wrestling and grappling on the ground.
But I got into MMA for the sport. I love fighting.
I accept MMA, I appreciate MMA, I even get techniques from MMA, surprisingly, like footwork techniques and how I move. It's different and unorthodox to what boxers are normally used to.
MMA is a full combat sport comprising 36 different styles of fighting including karate, judo and kung-fu.
What people need and what they want may be very different.... Teachers are those who educate the people to appreciate the things they need.
MMA is very difficult; you can't just be good at wrestling. You need striking, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu and countless other things.
It is very different. I mean, it was immediately different because it's a human being and it's not a vampire and it's not fighting monsters. This isn't the kind of movie that's got the comic book style of fighting to it. It was a bit more gritty.
Fighting in the ring or cage is very much different from fighting in the street. Fighting in the street is very much fueled by anger, pride, and male dominance and ego.
Some things need to be a song. Some things need to be a play. Some things need to be a painting. Some things need to be-though I'd never be a choreographer-some things might ought to be a dance [laughs]. I've found that exploring an idea in different ways, it gives you different opportunities.
Of course to be a legend of the sport you have to truly have to have a love for MMA. You can be successful in MMA without having that love.
I love MMA. I will be involved in some capacity, or in various capacities within the sport, after my fighting career is over.
I love the sport, I'm a fan of MMA, I've been a fan of MMA since before I started it, I was a fan of Eddie Alvarez before I started fighting, so just the culmination of events that have transpired in my life through hard work, through specifically hard work, it's just, I'm happy.
You have to move on with your life at some point. You don't quit fighting, fighting quits you at some point. It's very unfortunate, but that's the nature of the beast. And that's one of those things, too, that I like to tell young fighters. Have a backup plan.
Doing a film with somebody who's from a different country or culture than you is very fulfilling because they bring with them different insights, experiences, cultural norms, and expectations. All of those things can sort of broaden your own understanding of things or provide a different perspective.
I didn't really have intentions of fighting in MMA; it just kind of fell into place. Once I started fighting, though, I loved it, and I walked away from kickboxing right away.
Peace means something different from 'not fighting'. Those aren't peace advocates, they're 'stop fighting' advocates. Peace is an active and complex thing and sometimes fighting is part of what it takes to get it.
