Emotion is a good thing, but top level football can be tough, and you have to be in control. — © Trent Alexander-Arnold
Emotion is a good thing, but top level football can be tough, and you have to be in control.
It takes a very tough man to play defensive line at any level of football, but to be able to do it on a Division 1 level, or a professional level, it takes that intensity, that aggression, and you have to be tough.
I always hoped I'd get a chance to prove myself at the top level because I believed I could do it, but making your way up the football ladder is very tough.
The level of football in England is the top. English football is the leader in the world.
All the guys at this top level, they're pretty much dangerous all over the place. If you're not good all over the place, you'll be in a little bit of trouble. It's hard to swim at the top end if you're only good at one thing.
Consistency is a huge thing at the top. It's hard to get to a good level, but once you get to a certain level, there's people who want your place.
The emotion to handle the pressure is one of the biggest challenges in football - it's the top challenge.
It's all emotion. But there's nothing wrong with emotion. When we are in love, we are not rational; we are emotional. When we are on vacation, we are not rational; we are emotional. When we are happy, we are not [rational]. In fact, in more cases than not, when we are rational, we're actually unhappy. Emotion is good; passion is good. Being into what we're into, provided that it's a healthy pursuit, it's a good thing.
Some people say, "Sometimes I have violent thoughts, what can I do?" So I say, "Well, have them!" Cos we should not try to control ourselves. It's very bad to control ourselves in this sense. If you have any emotion at all, if its a bad emotion or good emotion, think about it, you should just understand that you have those emotions. And it's good because we are people and we have all these emotions. And the result of that is you would become more and more peaceful. If you don't let those emotions be inside of you then you become extremely violent.
No emotion, merely as an emotion, is a sin, because we cannot directly control the arising of an emotion in our soul.
You can't make good decisions that are going to be meaningful, productive, when you lose control, and you have to maintain mental control, emotional control and to be able to perform physically up to your own particular level of competency; you have to keep your emotions under control.
Football is an emotional game, and that is why we love it, but part of the work I have to do is to control that emotion both for me and my players.
Taking drugs on a recreation level is one thing. But taking them while you're working on a stage is, I don't think it was that great. It's the control factor. And the thing about being on stage, you really want to feel that you're sort of in control a lot. It's not a place where you want to be out of control.
Everyone's got talent at the level we're at. But being a smart, tough football player - there's a huge premium for that.
When you're in operations, the best thing you can do at the top level is get the strategy right. You have to get the big ideas right, you have to determine what is the policy, what is the level of effort you're willing to commit to it? And then you delegate to those who have to execute that strategy to the appropriate level. What's the appropriate level? It's the level where people are trained and equipped to take decisions so we move swiftly against the enemy.
Sometimes people say to me that I celebrate over the top, but when you score, the emotion... you just can't control it. It's the same with owning a horse that wins.
Top-level football gives you fame and money, but it takes away a lot, too.
