Shamshera' is a dream project and I feel blessed to have an opportunity to be a part of it and portray such a different and interesting character.
To me what's most important when I'm signing a project is the character that I'm going to portray and whether it gives the opportunity to show different facets of my craft.
It is a satisfying feeling for an actor when one gets an opportunity to portray different shades through the character because it fulfills one's hunger.
Every character thinks differently, and every character has a different energy and way that they tick. But to find a character like Kai, who is so far that he doesn't even feel things, he is so different from me. That is the most exciting part.
Also, with acting and dancing I portray a predetermined character and story for the most part, with music I have the creative freedom to create a song on a whim with whomever I choose and at whatever time I choose to do it. It's more liberating artistically and that's why I've stuck with it. It's a good balance to be able to portray a character and also be myself in avenues that I'm passionate about.
With The Help, I knew folks involved in the project peripherally. I wanted to audition for Hilly Holbrook and part of the initial feedback was: "No, Bryce is too nice." That's part of the reason why I really love auditions as well - you get to try out a character and try out different versions of a character.
Kim's' gave me my first opportunity to portray an Asian character with significant story arcs and subtleties that most Western Asian actors can only dream of. The show was integral in allowing me to find my voice and shape the perspective and platform that I now have.
Every actor, has a dream role, I would like to admit Kamini Mathur is my dream role and I am so happy to portray this character.
My childhood memories reside somewhere in my subconscious part of my brain. Somehow I feel that my subconscious part creates far more interesting things than my conscious part can ever dream of.
Often times, if a character is pretty straightforward, he or she is not as interesting to portray.
What's interesting in scripted TV is different than what's interesting in reality TV. Each of their departments have their development process where they package things and put together the writers and put together the producers and the different elements and develop the projects. By the time you get to a network or to a studio, you're able to say this is the project, here's who the producer is, sometimes even here's who the star is, here's who the writer is. It's a well-developed project by the time it gets to the studios.
You're in everyone's homes every week as this character, and they feel like they know you, and then they start to really define you as this character that you portray.
It was interesting to portray a character that was so far removed from today's world, but was also at the forefront of feminism at that time.
I would want the audience to simply see the character I portray in each movie in its true essence because I feel acting is all about truthfully portraying the character.
It's quite a layered character that I portray in 'Jalebi' and I needed to deviate and cut-off completely from the world to get into a different zone as a character. I'm really glad it proved beneficial and worked to my advantage.
Many accents and languages is part of myself has definitely played an important role in who I am today as an actor. I feel that speaking five languages has given me the opportunity to work in many different countries across our globe and it makes me understand better the value of each project when it is written in its original language.
When my body gets to the point where I can no longer function or feel gratitude, then I'll leave it and become grateful again. But until then, I will appreciate what I have and not whine about what I don't have. I will feel blessed by life and the opportunity to help others see that they are blessed, too.
